Nevil Hulett is the son of the founder of St Francis Bay, Leighton Hulett and has been living here all his life. He has been running a development company since his father’s death in 1978, Leighton Hulett Estates. He developed the last phase of the well known St Francis canal system in 2002, and now develops select pieces of property within St Francis Bay, building on the goodwill of past developments.
Nevil has been doing paragliding since 1992 after he was introduced to the sport by the then world champion, Robbie Whitall. Robbie told Nevil that the low 90 meter high hills only 20 km from St Francis Bay were perfect for paragliding because (contrary to popular belief) paragliding did not need high mountains with steep cliffs to jump off. A beginners course at Wilderness and a safety course at Arthurs Seat in the Drakensberg soon followed. Since then he won his first SA National Championships in 2002 as well as the British Open, he has been a member of the Protea Paragliding team since 2001, and broke two world paragliding distance records 17 years later in 2008.
