On Saturday August 6, 2011 the annual Pam Golding St Francis Canal Canoe Challenge took place on three different routes through the canals.  41 paddlers took part in 26 canoes and for the first time a K3 was seen in a local race!

Only juniors competed in the 3km race.  The under 16 race was won by Roeltin Louw in 20:02, followed by Jason Carroll in second place.   The under 12 race was won by Michael Birch (21:49) and second (first and only girl) was Nicol Stewart in a time of 26:26.

The 13km race was won by Glenn Barclay (1:17:39), followed by Keith Birch and Brain Wells.  In the doubles race Dean Barclay and Bruce Green won, followed by Byron Adams and Darryl Staples.  Richard Arderne and Eric Stewart came third.

The winner of the 20km race through the canals was Stuart Laing in 01:42:44, second was Steve Honey, third Mike Stark and fourth his son-in-law Francois Greyling.  Doubles winners were Jordan Zeelie and Calvin Zeelie who beat Richard von Wildeman and Hayden Skinner, as well as locals Pete King and Stephen Vorster.

Ladies doubles winner were Kerry Louw and Kirsten Wessels, and the over 50 division were won by Andre van Rooyen and Henry Goedhals where the mixed doubles winners were Christi Augesteyn and Karien Bezuidenhout.

As per tradition paddlers were treated with some “boeretroos en beskuit” on arrival, and a well deserved boerie roll after the race.
