SPAR-PAM-GOLDING-QUADRATHLON-2011The fourth annual Village Square SUPERSPAR Pam Golding Quadrathlon that was held on November 5 from the small boat harbour on the St Francis Bay canals proved that this event is here to stay on the annual St Francis Sport calendar, as 170 participants braved a gale force wind of up to 55km per hour giving the organizers no chance to consider cancelling!

Athletes from Nico Malan High, Woodridge College and GLA as well as Stulting Primary, St Francis Bay College and Jeffreys Bay Primary brought their friends and families to see who can paddle, cycle, run and swim the fastest. It was also great to see village children forming teams with their friends from different schools. Individual entrees from all the local communities were received in the Open Categories with groups of friends having a tough but much enjoyable time braving the elements (and they are still friends!).

A group of under 10’s took part in a mini duathlon consisting of a run and cycle around the Big Time Circle. The boys race was won by Sine Sahke, followed by Mateo de Beer and Jamie Linsday and the tough girls were Molly Wilson as winner, with Saskia May and Jessica Brown in second and third place respectively.

Disney Creche will benefit by having their buildings maintained to the amount of nearly R2000, as R10 per entrant being donated for this worthy cause. (The St Francis Bay MTB Challenge of November 27 profits will further add to this kitty).

Next year will be the fifth annual event, and sponsors and organisers are already talking about some improvements such as a musical show while waiting for the prize-giving, and marquee with more eats and drinks to stay open after the prize-giving (weather permitting!!!). Pam Golding offered a R1000 cash prize for the first local individual over 50 as well as for the school with the most entrees.

“It is a very tricky event to organise, with four different legs (paddle, cycle, swim, run), two different distances as well as the under 10′s duathlon. The prize-giving is also huge, with many age groups, plus teams and individuals, and within teams, girls/boys and mixed! All this was carried out smoothly by Jo and Michelle, a big thank you to them,” Richard Arderne said on behalf of the sponsors.
